Definition & Purpose

Medical billing is a growing career, as insurance companies and the government are spending more time and money researching and controlling claims fraud. A successful medical billing specialist will know medical terminology, anatomy, be familiar with the forms that have to be completed and the required coding for insurance purposes.

Our Medical Billing and Coding Office Assistant program is an integrated course which contains the following:

This program not only provides the necessary skills to enter the medical field as an NHA Certified Billing and Coding Specialist, but also to excel in clinics, nursing homes and hospitals with impressive office skills that take advantage of Microsoft Office 2003 and QuickBooks Professional accounting software.

The program provides knowledge and skills needed to accurately report, transmit and track claims. Introduces the basic principles and application of ICD-9-CM and CPT codes for diagnoses and medical services required for insurance reimbursement.

Course Outline

  • Medical Terminology: Students are taught prefixes, roots, and suffixes that together can be used to form over 11,000 medical terms.
  • International Classification of Diseases ICD: This teaches coding and reimbursement for the hospital inpatient setting designed to assist coders and those interested in coding careers.
  • Current Procedural Terminology CPT: is a listing of descriptive terms and identifying codes for reporting medical services and procedures. The purpose of CPT is to provide a uniform language that accurately describes medical, surgical, and diagnostic services
  • HCPCS Coding: This program provides instruction and exercises in Modifiers, Supplies, Therapy, Outpatient PPS and Dental Durable Medical Equipment to Administrative Drugs Temporary DME, Orthotic/Prosthetic, Medical Services Pathology and Laboratory/ Diagnostic Radiology Temporary National Code (Non-Medicare), Vision Services
